Green fuels made from soya beans can cause four times more climate-warming emissions than standard diesel or petrol, according to a European report. The European Union has set a goal of obtaining 10 per cent of its road fuels from renewable sources by 2020. But a report by the European Commission found some biofuels can cause four times as much carbon dioxide than fossil fuels. The report, released under Freedom of Information rules, looked at "indirect emissions" caused by land use change. In America, soya beans that used to be grown as animal feed are used as biofuels, meaning Brazilian rainforest is cleared to grow beans for animals instead.
